The Artist’s Garden: Women Make Sculpture by Claire Mander

Claire Mander presents the Artist’s Garden, dedicated to the work of contemporary women sculptors making innovative work for the public, in the open air.  Rooted in her interest in sculpture in the landscape, she will outline the project’s aim of creating a ‘garden’ as a context for exploration, nurturing and experimentation. She will introduce a selection of the works from the project including those by Holly Hendry, Heywood & Condie and Lakwena as well as from theCOLAB/Yorkshire Sculpture Park/Royal College of Art Sculpture Graduate Award winners and the Women’s Work commissions, all of which are exhibited with a canopy of sky on the roof of Temple tube station.

Claire Mander is the founder of the independent organisation theCOLAB, which operates beyond the white cube and brings together people, land and art in unconventional spaces, in the open air. In 2021, she transformed a neglected half-acre roof terrace into ‘the Artist’s Garden’ and was Artistic Advisor in the realisation of the Headlands to Headspace landscape art commissions across Morecambe Bay.  As Deputy Director of the Royal British Society of Sculptors she initiated theCOLAB Programme which realised SKULPTUR showing the work of 17 Nordic sculptors across three sites in London, Sculpture Shock’s series of site-specific residencies and commissions for nine artists across nine sites and the Boyle Family commission. Deeply interested in encouraging making skills, she is Board Member of the National Festival of Making NPO, sits on the Westminster ‘s City of Sculpture panel and was formerly Trustee/Chair for UK Friends of the National Museum of Women in the Arts (Washington DC).
