Raffaele Monti in Victorian Britain (1848-1881) by Albertina Ciani Sciolla

This talk will examine the work of Raffaele Monti (1818–1881), an Italian sculptor whose career evolved through a unique intersection of Milanese Neoclassicism and Victorian cultural influences. Trained in Milan, Monti’s early works reflect the refined late Neoclassical style of early nineteenth-century Italy. However, after moving to England in 1848, his style began to transform in response to the changing artistic climate. This presentation will explore Raffaele’s early formation, including his time in Milan, Vienna, and Budapest, to understand the technical and stylistic foundations that shaped his work. Nevertheless, the main focus will be on Monti’s most famous sculptures, such as his Veiled Women, his contributions to the Crystal Palace in Sydenham, and his role in applied arts design. These works exemplify the fusion of his Italian classical training with the growing interest in realism and decorative arts in Britain. Through a detailed analysis of these pieces, I will demonstrate how Raffaele’s work bridged the gap between his Italian roots and the British artistic environment, influencing both sculpture and the decorative arts. The talk will highlight Monti’s lasting impact on nineteenth-century art, offering insights into how cultural exchange shaped his legacy.

Albertina Ciani Sciolla holds a degree in Cultural Heritage from the University of Turin and a master’s in Visual Arts from the University of Bologna, with a thesis on the sculptor Carlo Marochetti. She is currently a doctoral student at the University of Buckingham, researching the biography and catalogue of works of Raffaele Monti. Her project examines Monti’s role within the context of Victorian sculpture, investigating his relationship with official patronage and the application of sculpture in industry. Albertina’s research explores how Monti’s work both influenced and was shaped by the British artistic environment of the late nineteenth century.
