Yvonne Hudson Rusbridge (1924–1985)

Sculptor, ceramicist, tapestry artist, born in London. She attended the Slade School of Fine Art (in Oxford during the Second Word War) and developed an interest in sculpture, with ceramic stoneware as her favourite medium, producing life-size sculptures, smaller figures and wall plaques. She built a large kiln on the farm in Earnley, Chichester, where she lived. In later life she also created tapestries, sometimes in conjunction with fellow Sussex artist Rosalie Williams. Her works, influenced to a large degree by her Christian faith, include: a small statue of St Anne above the main door of St Anne’s Church, East Wittering; a large tapestry depicting the acts of five Sussex saints in Birdham Church near Chichester; an altar cloth and two ceramic panels on each side of the chancel in Earnley Church; the St Richard embroideries (with Rosalie Williams), for Chichester Cathedral; and a statue of St Richard in St Mary’s Church, Haverford West, in Wales. Hers also is the ceramic tile relief of Minerva in Crane Street, Chichester (1966). In Earnley Church there is a stained glass window by Paul Soderberg (dated 1987), created in Hudson’s memory and using some of her designs.
